Advances in Stroke Medicine

Stroke is the third largest killer of Canadian adults, the primary cause of physical disabilities and the second largest cause of mental disability.

October 29th is World Stroke Day – a day focused on raising awareness for the prevention and treatment of stroke, and to provide better care and support for survivors.

ReWalk for Stroke Therapy

 Technion alumnus Dr. Amit Goffer is the inventor of ReWalk, an exo-suit which gives independent mobility to those who are physically impaired. The FDA recently approved this innovative suit for use in stroke therapy. This advancement will improve the lives of many stroke survivors!




Improving Rehabilitation 

Electromyography (EMG) assessment can help researchers and clinicians better understand and treat stroke-induced brain damage and improve post-stroke rehabilitation therapy. Tal Shnitzer, Teaching Assistant at Technion, was the main supervisor for an Electromyography (EMG) research project in the Electrical Engineering department. Researchers observed pattern recognition and classifications in post stroke patients in an attempt to predict their movements through their brain waves. Understanding the patient’s intended movements can help in rehabilitation and performance of everyday tasks.





Hope for Failing Hearts 

The link between heart disease and stroke is significant. Several types of heart diseases are risk factors for stroke. Likewise, stroke is a risk factor for coronary heart disease.

Technion professor and renowned cardiologist Izhak Kehat’s  research focuses on genetic modification for failing hearts. His work is especially topical, since cardiovascular disease is now the leading cause of deaths worldwide. Prof. Kehat is head of the Molecular Cardiovascular System Research Lab in the Technion’s Rappaport Faculty of Medicine.




Sleep Soundly

Sleep Apnea is a serious medical condition that can cause your breathing to stop and start many times while you sleep. As noted by The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, there is a strong link between sleep apnea, high blood pressure and stroke. Even short pauses in breathing while you sleep are hard on the heart because they lower the amount of oxygen reaching the heart.

An international research team led by the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology has developed an innovative, AI-based software to detect obstructive sleep apnea.



Technion is doing their part to help reduce the effects of strokes on the population, but make sure you do your part as well! A healthy diet, exercise and quitting smoking are good starting points to reduce your risk of having a stroke.
