For more than a century, the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology has been a pioneer in science and technology education, delivering world-changing impacts benefiting the State of Israel and the world.

Proudly a global university, the Technion has a presence on three continents: Haifa (Israel), New York (USA), and Shantou (China). The Technion’s unique focus on interdisciplinary education challenges students to think differently about the world’s problems, preparing students to become the next generation of global innovators.

That approach doesn’t stop at the classroom. The Technion has long leveraged interdisciplinary collaborations to advance breakthrough research and technologies. As a result, Technion people, ideas, and inventions make immeasurable contributions to the world every single day — “from new ways to detect and treat cancer to sustainable energy and biofuels to quantum computing and breakthroughs in computer science.”

Leadership at the Technion

Technion President

Professor Uri Sivan is the 17th president of the Technion, a post he has held since October 2019, and a renowned physicist with expertise in nanotechnology. In 2005, he was named the founding director of the Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute (RBNI) at the Technion, which spearheaded Israel’s nanotechnology program and helped to position the country as a leader in the field. Professor Sivan served as founding director of the RBNI through 2010.

He focuses his work on quantum physics and the harnessing of molecular and cellular biology for the self-assembly of miniature electronic devices. In 2017, his research helped launch an Israeli startup in the field of single-cell analysis for cancer diagnostics. He also co-created the world’s tiniest Bible, engraving the Old Testament onto a gold-plated silicon chip the size of a pinhead.

About the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute

The Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute is a uniquely experimental graduate institute housed on the Cornell Tech campus on New York City’s Roosevelt Island. A partnership between Cornell University and the Technion, the curriculum is not centred on specific disciplines, but on interdisciplinary “hubs” that are relevant to New York City’s key industries. Already operating hubs are Connective Media, focused on mobile and interactive media, and Health Tech, focused on creating digital solutions for better health care outcomes. The hubs will change to meet New York City’s evolving demands, and to advance the campus’ vision of creating pioneering leaders and technologies for the digital age. Classes for Urban Tech, a hub that combines applied research, startups, and a first-of-its-kind dual master’s degree focused on making cities more resilient, connected, and equitable, will begin in Fall 2020.

The Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute is also home to the Runway Startup Postdoc Program. Part business school, part research institution, and part startup incubator, Runway is geared to students who have mastered their academic disciplines but want to learn how to start a company. Recent Ph.D.s in digital technology fields are taught to shift from an academic mindset to an entrepreneurial outlook, turning their research into tech products and services that can make a difference in people’s lives. Through classes and workshops, access to industry mentors, and financial support, Runway is helping to nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs and breakthrough products.

As the embodiment of the Technion and Cornell’s winning submission in New York City’s competition to create an applied sciences grad school, the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute is boosting the City’s tech sector and fostering companies with global impact. By advancing collaboration between academia and industry, the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute is already transforming New York City into a global tech hub.

About the Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology

The Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) is an historic partnership between the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and Shantou University (STU) to promote joint undergraduate and graduate-level research and innovation. Located in China’s Guangdong Province, GTIIT is the first Israeli university in China and the Technion’s second presence on a campus outside Israel. Made possible by a $130 million grant from the Li Ka Shing Foundation (LKSF), the venture represents unprecedented cooperation between the People’s Government of Guangdong Province and the Shantou Municipal Government, the Technion, and STU.

The university imports Israel’s innovative and entrepreneurial spirit to China, with a goal of fostering a high-tech industrial ecosystem in Shantou and Guangdong Province. With a focus on the three interconnected areas of environmental sciences, energy resources, and human health, GTIIT aims to train scientists and engineers who will create pioneering research for China and the world.
