Emergency Campus Security & Student Support Fund

Protecting The People Who Power Israel

The Technion community is operating in a period of heightened national uncertainty, where security conditions can shift quickly and campus readiness is essential to protect the students, faculty, staff, and infrastructure. In this moment, the Emergency Campus Security and Student Support Fund offers two practical, and tangible ways donor can help:

1) Strengthens critical campus security and emergency infrastructure

2) Ensures students whose education was interrupted can return with stability and the support they need to continue their studies

The Emergency Campus Security and Student Support Fund is part of a coordinated global effort. Your gift will be pooled with those from donors across the 18 Technion societies worldwide, ensuring that resources are deployed with maximum impact.

A Commitment to Every Student

After October 7, 2023, Technion President Uri Sivan vowed that learning and discovery would continue with as little disruption as possible. We decided then that we would not leave any student behind. Today, our focus remains on meeting the financial, psychological, and academic needs of the students who have paused their studies. We are working to ensure they can pause their studies with confidence and transition back to academic life seamlessly, providing the stability they need to power Israel’s future.

“The war required that we turn the campus from just a normal university campus to a place where faculty, staff, and students can function safely…”

Prof. Uri Sivan, President of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology

How Canadians Have Helped the Technion Keep It’s Promise

 4,400+ Students Supported

We have already provided waived tuition or housing fees for one semester to thousands of students who have had to pause their studies due to war.

7,900+ Tutoring Hours

We provided thousands of hours of private instruction to ensure those returning did not fall behind in their demanding degrees.

Psychological Support

367 students received specialized support through the Beatrice Weston Unit, and 26 counselors were trained in trauma-informed care.

Upgraded Security

We equipped faculty with 40 backup communication devices and procured 2 emergency response vehicles to keep the campus operational under fire.

“The Technion gave me the chance to rebuild, to move forward, even as I carry everything I’ve been through.”

Urgent Campus Needs

While major gift opportunities are available for specific high-priority projects, all contributions to the Emergency Campus Security and Student Support Fund are part of this coordinated global effort. This collective funding allows the Technion to address emergency security and student needs in real-time, with every dollar prioritized and directed toward the most urgent projects as identified by campus leadership.

Read more about some of the urgent needs below.

Infrastructure

Potable Water Emergency Reservoir

To safeguard the Technion community during emergencies such as missile attacks or war, a dedicated potable water storage facility is urgently needed. The current reservoir, used exclusively for firefighting, is no longer suitable for drinking water. A new 1,500 m³ reservoir is essential to ensure access to safe water during crises, support emergency response — including firefighting — and maintain operational continuity.

Project Cost: $2,713,505 CAD

Shelters in the Senate and MALAT Buildings

Shelters in the Senate and MALAT Buildings
Funds are needed to construct new safe rooms and upgrade existing shelters in the Senate Building — the Technion’s main administrative facility that houses the offices of the president and senior leadership — and in the MALAT Building, which contains teaching laboratories, industry partnerships, and the Technion Technology Transfer offices. These spaces must meet today’s safety standards to protect lives during missile attacks and other emergencies.

Project cost: $542,700 CAD

Entrance Gate Stations

The Technion’s entrance gates require urgent renovation to enhance the security of guards and improve overall access control to the campus. These upgrades will include fortified infrastructure and updated monitoring systems.

Project Cost: $67,838 CAD

Surveillance

Security Surveillance Systems

Security Surveillance Systems (Main Campus & Bat Galim)
Advanced security cameras and a public address system will be installed in key locations such as the cable car station, main bus stops, several student dormitories, the Canada Building, and the central route to the Senate Building (which houses the Technion administration and president’s office). Particular attention is required for upgrading the Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine in Bat Galim, Haifa, which urgently needs a full system upgrade.

Project Cost: $542,700 CAD

Recording Servers for CCTV

To centralize and modernize surveillance footage recording, the Technion plans to implement a new server system that will manage and store all campus camera feeds securely and efficiently.

Project Cost: $144,721 CAD

Security System for the Sarona Complex (Tel Aviv Campus)

A state-of-the-art security camera system, public address network, entrance control, and alarm system will be installed at the Technion’s Tel Aviv Sarona campus to bring it in line with modern security standards.

Project Cost: $135,675 CAD

Thermal Surveillance Equipment

Installation of thermal cameras on the University of Haifa tower (overlooking the Technion) will allow for 24/7 monitoring of the Technion campus, particularly during security incidents such as missile or rocket strikes. These systems enhance situational awareness during low-visibility or high-risk situations.

Project Cost: $90,450 CAD

First Response

Security Vehicle for Emergency Response

An additional security vehicle, fully equipped with surveillance and emergency response tools, is needed to allow for faster, more effective incident response and campus patrols.

Project Cost: $226,125

Emergency Firefighting Trailer

A fully equipped emergency response trailer containing water tanks, hoses, and advanced firefighting gear is required to enable rapid deployment in the event of a fire or explosion. This capability is critical for protecting both lives and infrastructure.

Project Cost: $31,658 CAD

Communication

WAVE Communication Devices

SIM-based long-range communication devices that enable seamless, real-time connectivity between security teams are needed on all Technion campuses throughout Israel. These tools are vital in times of heightened national alert when communication can be disrupted.

Project Cost: $45,225 CAD

New Communication Repeater

The Technion’s current radio communication repeater is outdated and unreliable. A new system is essential to ensure clear, uninterrupted coordination among security personnel, particularly during emergencies.

Project Cost: $15,829 CAD

Donate

As Israel confronts unprecedented threats, students are leaving classrooms and will return to campus carrying the weight of disruption, and uncertainty. Your gift to the Emergency Campus Security and Student Support Fund is a direct response to this moment. It strengthens critical security upgrades that protect the Technion campus and reinforces sensitive research, materials, and facilities. Equally as important, it ensures that students have the housing and tuition assistance, counseling, and academic support they need to regain stability, momentum, and hope.
