AI & Beyond: International Conference on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at the Technion

The conference will bring together leading minds from academia and industry to advance research and development at the intersection of these two fields

On February 5, the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology will host the AI & BEYOND Robotics Conference, which will focus on the interface between the AI revolution and the world of robotics.

The field of robotics plays a central role in the AI revolution, and the convergence of these two worlds is already driving dramatic changes in research and industry, transforming work patterns and daily life. Chip giant NVIDIA announced plans to launch humanoid robots this year. OpenAI, known for developing ChatGPT, is also developing “human-like” robots. Even car manufacturer Tesla has its version of such a future robot, named “Optimus.” These robots are expected to integrate into industry, where many tasks are repetitive and pre-planned, as well as into our constantly changing daily lives that requiring robots to “recalculate” their tasks continuously – whether it’s mopping the floor, walking the dog, or preparing dinner.

As a leading technological science institution, the Technion is at the forefront of these developments, pooling knowledge and resources from various engineering fields –

aerospace and mechanical engineering, electrical and biomedical engineering, computer science, data science, and decision sciences. The AI & BEYOND Robotics Conference will bring together top minds from academia, industry, and other sectors to advance the integration of AI in robotics, foster the creation of new knowledge, and promote collaborations within the Technion and between Technion researchers and relevant industry and academic partners.

The conference will be held within the framework of Tech.AI.Robotics—a new branch under the Technion’s Center for Artificial Intelligence (Tech.AI), headed by Prof. Vadim Indelman, a member in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering with a secondary affiliation with the Faculty of Data and Decision Sciences. The event will be opened by Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan and Israel Innovation Authority Chairman Dr. Alon Stopel, a graduate of the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Conference sessions will cover a range of topics, including the benefits and risks of autonomous mobility, appropriate behavior among autonomous agents, planning under uncertainty, and robots in surgical services.

The three keynote speakers at the conference:

  • Prof. Shlomo Zilberstein, a graduate of the Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science and currently a professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will speak on “Systems Aware of Their Capabilities”
  • Prof. Shai Shalev-Shwartz, a faculty member at the Hebrew University and CTO of Mobileye, will discuss “Learning from Data vs. Learning from Experience”
  • Dr. Judith Hocherman-Frommer, a graduate of the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering and currently VP of Research at Rafael, will speak on “Strategic Technological Directions for Defense and Swords of Iron Lessons Learned”

The conference will be held on February 5, 2025, at the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Auditorium 280).
